What is Home Health Care?
Home health care is different for everyone, but
- Assistance with daily activities, such as bathing and dressing
- Assistance with safely managing household tasks
- Therapy and rehabilitative services

How to Qualify for Home Health Care
- You need a doctor’s order determining that you need medical care in your home.
- You must need at least one of the following: skilled nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy or assistance with daily living activities, such as assistance with bathing due to safety reasons or physical limitations.
- Your doctor must certify that you are homebound or generally unable to leave home. Leaving home takes a considerable amount of effort. You may leave your home for medical treatment or infrequent, short absences for non-medical reasons, such as going to the grocery store or attending religious services.
- Your doctor must regularly review and sign your plan of care.
When qualifying for in home care services, it is essential to understand that although you must be homebound; this does not mean that you are forbidden or physically unable to leave your home. This does mean that when you do leave your home, there is a safety risk to your health or physical well-being and/or that the process is exhausting and overwhelming. You are able to leave your home as you and your doctor see fit; however, you may require assistance for health and safety reasons.
Does Medicare Cover Home Health Care?
Medicare may pay for skilled services, such as therapy and/or nursing in the home, if there is a skilled need and the patient is homebound. In order to qualify for Medicare in-home care benefits, you must meet the following five requirements:
- Be under the care of a doctor and you are getting services under a plan of care established and regularly reviewed by a doctor.
- You need and your doctor certifies that you need one or more of the following:
- Physical therapy
- Intermittent skilled nursing care (other than blood draws)
- Speech-language pathology services
- Continued occupational therapy
- The home health agency that will be caring for you is approved by Medicare
- You are homebound and your doctor certifies that you are homebound, which means you have trouble leaving your home without help, such as a wheelchair, cane, special transportation or help from another person.
- As part of the certification of eligibility, a doctor or other healthcare professionals that work with a doctor must document that they have had a face-to-face meeting with you within a required time frame and that the encounter was in relation to the reason you need home health care.
