PCA (personal care assistant) in home caregivers are there to help with a host of needs. Private duty nursing providers are expert caregivers including LPNs (licensed practical nurses) or RNs (registered nurses). Home care can assist with safety, security and increased independence as well as ease management of an ongoing medical condition. How to Qualify for Home Health Care
In order to qualify for home health care, you need to meet these conditions:

  • You need a doctor’s order determining that you need medical care in your home.
  • You must need at least one of the following: skilled nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy or assistance with daily living activities, such as assistance with bathing due to safety reasons or physical limitations.
  • Your doctor must certify that you are homebound or generally unable to leave home. Leaving home takes a considerable amount of effort. You may leave your home for medical treatment or infrequent, short absences for non-medical reasons, such as going to the grocery store or attending religious services.
  • Your doctor must regularly review and sign your plan of care.

When qualifying for in home care services, it is essential to understand that although you must be homebound; this does not mean that you are forbidden or physically unable to leave your home. This does mean that when you do leave your home, there is a safety risk to your health or physical well-being and/or that the process is exhausting and overwhelming. You are able to leave your home as you and your doctor see fit; however, you may require assistance for health and safety reasons.

Does Medicare Cover Home Health Care?
Medicare is the United States government’s healthcare coverage for Americans over the age of 65. In most situations, Medicare will generally cover about one-half of all the medical costs for seniors, such as doctor appointments, hospital visits, medical equipment and some nursing care.

Medicare may pay for skilled services, such as therapy and/or nursing in the home, if there is a skilled need and the patient is homebound. In order to qualify for Medicare in-home care benefits, you must meet the following five requirements:

  1. Be under the care of a doctor and you are getting services under a plan of care established and regularly reviewed by a doctor.
  2. You need and your doctor certifies that you need one or more of the following:
  • Physical therapy
  • Intermittent skilled nursing care (other than blood draws)
  • Speech-language pathology services
  • Continued occupational therapy
  1. The home health agency that will be caring for you is approved by Medicare
  2. You are homebound and your doctor certifies that you are homebound, which means you have trouble leaving your home without help, such as a wheelchair, cane, special transportation or help from another person.
  3. As part of the certification of eligibility, a doctor or other healthcare professionals that work with a doctor must document that they have had a face-to-face meeting with you within a required time frame and that the encounter was in relation to the reason you need home health care.
